Kellogg Community College’s Bruin Bookstore is again collecting gently used athletic shoes for donation and worn out athletic shoes to recycle as part of a Sneaker Collection campaign, running through Wednesday, April 30.
The bookstore, located on the first floor of the Lane-Thomas Memorial Building on 鶹Ƶ’s campus at 450 North Ave., Battle Creek, will accept the shoes during regular business hours, which are 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fridays.
Shoes still in decent shape will be donated to the Charitable Union in Battle Creek for distribution and reuse. Shoes in rougher shape will be donated to Playmakers in Okemos to be recycled.
This is the 11th year of the bookstore’s annual Sneaker Collection event. Over the previous 10 collection campaigns the store collected nearly 1,200 pairs of gently worn shoes for donation and unusable pairs for recycling, including 182 pairs in April 2024 alone.
The Sneaker Collection is one of many community collections undertaken at the Bruin Bookstore each year, which include an annual Hoodies for the Homeless shirts and coats collection each fall semester. An eyeglasses collection held each March since 2016 at the bookstore has resulted in several hundred pairs of used eyeglasses collected for donation and recycling through the Lions Club Recycle for Sight program.
The Sneaker Collection initiative also corresponds with the Bruin Bookstore’s Annual Spring Sale, running through Monday, May 12, and during which all 鶹Ƶ clothing and gift items are 20% off. (鶹Ƶ employees get an additional 10% off through their employee discount, for a full 30% off.)

Kellogg Community College will exhibit nearly 140 works of art created by 60 student artists as part of the College’s annual Student Art Show running through May 2 on campus in Battle Creek.
The exhibit, which opened April 16, is on display in the Eleanor R. and Robert A. DeVries Gallery in 鶹Ƶ’s Davidson Visual and Performing Arts Center, on campus at 450 North Ave. in Battle Creek. Art from the show can be viewed following the awards ceremony (see details below) online at .
The exhibit is free and open to the public during regular gallery hours, which are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays and 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursdays.
An awards ceremony highlighting select artists and works from the exhibit will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 25, at the Davidson Center to recognize student artists. That event is also free and open to the public.
Every spring, 鶹Ƶ Art, Photography and Multimedia and Graphic Design program students from the current academic year are invited to submit up to four entries for consideration for Student Art Exhibition awards. Media categories include:
> 2D Fine Art (drawing, painting, printmaking and 2D mixed media)
> 3D Fine Art (ceramics, sculpture, and 3D mixed media)
> Digital Design (digital illustration and graphic design)
> Photography (alternative print processes, black and white, digital, and digital composite)
> Time-Based Digital Media (animation and video)
A faculty committee reviews and organizes all submissions and the bulk of the work is juried independently by an art professional chosen from outside of the College. The juror selects the major media category awards and honorable mentions, with cash prizes made possible through a generous donation made to the 鶹Ƶ Foundation by artist Kimiko Petersen and her husband Sherman Petersen.
This year’s juror is sculptor and 鶹Ƶ alumnus Brian Nelson, a professor at Eastern Michigan University’s School of Art & Design whose work has been exhibited widely across the U.S. Nelson’s sculptures “16 Years (Paroxetine)” and “Zoloft (There Is Something About the Weather)” were displayed on 鶹Ƶ’s North Avenue campus from 2022 through 2024 as part of the College’s fourth annual Biennial Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition.
