Please note: The Student Art Show is free and open to the public during regular gallery hours, which are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays and 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursdays.

Kellogg Community College will exhibit nearly 140 works of art created by 60 student artists as part of the College’s annual Student Art Show running through May 2 on campus in Battle Creek.

The exhibit, which opened April 16, is on display in the Eleanor R. and Robert A. DeVries Gallery in �鶹��Ƶ’s Davidson Visual and Performing Arts Center, on campus at 450 North Ave. in Battle Creek. Art from the show can be viewed following the awards ceremony (see details below) online at��.��

The exhibit is free and open to the public during regular gallery hours, which are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays and 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursdays.

An awards ceremony highlighting select artists and works from the exhibit will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 25, at the Davidson Center to recognize student artists. That event is also free and open to the public.

Every spring, �鶹��Ƶ Art, Photography and Multimedia and Graphic Design program students from the current academic year are invited to submit up to four entries for consideration for Student Art Exhibition awards. Media categories include:

> 2D Fine Art (drawing, painting, printmaking and 2D mixed media)
> 3D Fine Art (ceramics, sculpture, and 3D mixed media)
> Digital Design (digital illustration and graphic design)
> Photography (alternative print processes, black and white, digital, and digital composite)
> Time-Based Digital Media (animation and video)

A faculty committee reviews and organizes all submissions and the bulk of the work is juried independently by an art professional chosen from outside of the College. The juror selects the major media category awards and honorable mentions, with cash prizes made possible through a generous donation made to the �鶹��Ƶ Foundation by artist Kimiko Petersen and her husband Sherman Petersen.

This year’s juror is sculptor and �鶹��Ƶ alumnus Brian Nelson, a professor at Eastern Michigan University’s School of Art & Design whose work has been exhibited widely across the U.S. Nelson’s sculptures “16 Years (Paroxetine)” and “Zoloft (There Is Something About the Weather)” were displayed on �鶹��Ƶ’s North Avenue campus from 2022 through 2024 as part of the College’s fourth annual Biennial Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition.

Event Details

Kellogg Community College will showcase the talents of a faculty and guest pianist performing pieces written for two pianos at an upcoming Faculty/Guest Artist Recital on campus in Battle Creek.

The recital, titled “Favorites Old and New,” will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 18, in the auditorium of the Davidson Visual and Performing Arts Center, on campus at 450 North Ave. in Battle Creek. The event free and open to the public.

The recital program will feature works spanning a variety of musical styles and movements.

About the Artist: Faculty Pianist Paula Harris

Faculty artist Paula Harris holds an Associate in Arts degree from Kellogg Community College and a Bachelor’s degree in Worship Arts (Piano Performance) from Spring Arbor University (2008). She has been a teacher and an accompanist in the community for several years, and taught at the Community Music School for more than 20 years. In 2017, Harris opened her own studio, Paula the Piano Lady, where she currently continues to teach. Harris served as the worship director for Chapel Hill United Methodist Church from 2000 to 2012, where she met King and formed the duo “Grands Grandioso.”

About the Artist: Guest Pianist Joan King

Guest artist Joan King holds a Bachelor of Music in Education from Western Michigan University (1974). She retired from the Community Music School in Battle Creek, where she taught private piano for 10 years. She was organist and accompanist for the chancel choir at Chapel Hill United Methodist Church for 27 years, retiring in August. She currently teaches private piano lessons from her home.
