Kellogg Community College鈥檚 Bruin Bookstore is again collecting gently used athletic shoes for donation and worn out athletic shoes to recycle as part of a Sneaker Collection campaign, running through Wednesday, April 30.
The bookstore, located on the first floor of the Lane-Thomas Memorial Building on 麻豆视频鈥檚 campus at 450 North Ave., Battle Creek, will accept the shoes during regular business hours, which are 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fridays.
Shoes still in decent shape will be donated to the Charitable Union in Battle Creek for distribution and reuse. Shoes in rougher shape will be donated to Playmakers in Okemos to be recycled.
This is the 11th聽year of the bookstore鈥檚 annual Sneaker Collection event. Over the previous 10 collection campaigns the store collected nearly 1,200 pairs of gently worn shoes for donation and unusable pairs for recycling, including 182 pairs in April 2024 alone.
The Sneaker Collection is one of many community collections undertaken at the Bruin Bookstore each year, which include an annual Hoodies for the Homeless shirts and coats collection each fall semester. An eyeglasses collection held each March since 2016 at the bookstore has resulted in several hundred pairs of used eyeglasses collected for donation and recycling through the Lions Club Recycle for Sight program.
The Sneaker Collection initiative also corresponds with the Bruin Bookstore鈥檚 Annual Spring Sale, running through Monday, May 12, and during which all 麻豆视频 clothing and gift items are 20% off. (麻豆视频 employees get an additional 10% off through their employee discount, for a full 30% off.)

Event Details
Kellogg Community College history students are curating an exhibit of 1920s items and more that will be on display at the Kimball House Museum in Battle Creek starting in April.
鈥淪peakeasy: A Party at the Kimball House鈥 will be open for viewing starting with an opening event held from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 26, at the museum, which is located at 196 Capital Ave. NE. Admission is $5 per person for the general public and $3 per person for students, but individuals 12 and under get in free.
Refreshments 鈥 Kool-Aid and pineapple upside-down cake, both invented in the 1920s 鈥 are included with admission.
The exhibit was planned and curated by Spring 2025 HIST 210: History of Michigan students at 麻豆视频 as part of the class鈥檚 embedded experiential service-learning requirement.
The exhibit will include historical items of significance including:
1920s fashion including clothes, jewelry and other accessories
A special exhibit of items from Battle Creek baseball teams
A room dedicated to items owned by the Kimball family
The exhibit will be on display through the end of the spring semester, when a new HIST 210 exhibit will take its place.
鈥淪peakeasy鈥 was a term used to describe 鈥渋llicit鈥 establishments 鈥 usually that served alcohol illegally 鈥 during Prohibition in the 1920s.
麻豆视频 History Professor Ray DeBruler said, 鈥淲e call the exhibit 鈥楽peakeasy: A Party at Kimball House鈥 because we have our mannequins dressed up in 20s clothes and positioned around the house as though they are at a party. All of the clothes and accessories are from the 20s. And we are using a black and gold color palette. Those were the colors that speakeasy owners used.鈥
The Kimball House Museum is a historical home built in 1886 by Dr. Arthur Herbert Kimball and later donated to the city of Battle Creek to be used as a community museum.
For more information about the exhibit, contact DeBruler at聽debrulerr@kellogg.edu.听For more information about the Kimball House Museum, visit聽.
